AN INTERVIEW with VOGUE.COM.AU

DANIELLE GAY

12 DEC 2019

Georgie Palamountain couldn’t find a luxury beauty salon where she could see the same therapist for all of her monthly treatments. So she created one.

Georgie Palamountain was inspired to open her own beauty salon while on a trip to Europe in 2018. “There was a tiny little neighbourhood nail and beauty salon (a third of the size of Pamperina), which was bright and colourful with lovely European therapists who were proud of their profession,” she shared. “I always wanted to find one therapist at a professional salon who I could see monthly for all of my favourite treatments–facial, manicure, pedicure and an eyebrow wax and tint. This way, you get to know the therapist, and the therapist gets to know you, meaning that each month you simply show up to your appointment and your therapist fixes you up without any words needing to be exchanged.” When she returned to Sydney, she made a business plan, presented it to an investor and found a location, a beautiful little shop front in leafy Woollahra.

Here, Palamountain explains how and why she did it. Tell me about the decision to launch Pamperina as a European-style salon?“Aestheticians from Europe are trained in manicure, pedicure, eyebrows and skin–and they tend to see the same clients for all of these treatments month after month. A strong relationship between client and therapist is formed which is personal and full of trust.”Georgie Palamountain, the founder of Pamperina, in her Woollahra salon. Did you have a background in beauty?“My background is in marketing and communications. I have worked in retail, sales and marketing to pay the rent over the years, and I have always made time to upskill with short courses on the side that I’m passionate about. Whether that be in fashion, beauty, interiors, photography, floristry, digital marketing, languages or art, I have always enjoyed learning new skills and being creative. I always dreamt of one day combining my passions and I have always loved beauty and skincare so having my own salon is a dream come true.”

What is the mantra for Pamperina, what is your overall goal in terms of the space you want to create and what you want your customers to feel?

“When customers visit the salon I want them to feel all the things I would like to feel when I go into a beauty salon. I want them to feel safe and cocooned–something they’ll definitely feel when they slip on our oversized kimono spa robe and nestle under our freshly washed white waffle throw during a treatment.

I want a client’s experience at Pamperina to suit them. If they want to sleep, they can. If they want to talk, great, and if not, no problems at all. I want customers to feel at ease when they visit us, and to know that whatever they want from their experience is what they’ll get.”

How did you decide on the name?“I used a simple word grid. I put ten words at the top and ten words along the bottom and I kept coming back to these words, ‘pamper’ and ‘ballerina’. A lot of friends and family tried to give me suggestions but deep down I knew I was the only one who could come up with the name because I was the one with the vision for the salon. It wasn’t until I had the keys to the shop that I landed on Pamperina. Beauty and ballet are two of my biggest passions in life so merging pamper and ballerina just felt right. I couldn’t be happier with the name.”How did you decide on which treatments to offer? Can you tell us about some of those treatments?

When selecting treatments for the salon it was crucial that each one was effective, reasonably priced and non-invasive. We have carefully curated a service offering complete with quality treatments that isn’t overwhelming. The Signature Deep Pore Cleansing Facial is one of our most popular facials, and a personal favourite of mine too. Suitable for all skin types, this a great purifying facial that will remove dirt and dull surface skin cells, as well as nourish and rejuvenate the skin. The Kure Bazaar Organic Pedicure is a more recent addition to the salon and we are proud to be the only Australian stockist of the non-toxic vegan nail polish. After soaking your feet in a copper pedicure bowl filled with warm water and soothing salts they are then treated to a beautiful foot mask containing Kure Bazaar’s luxurious natural blend of hydrating organic barley, aloe vera and avocado extracts. Nails are shaped, cuticles tidied and heels and feet exfoliated before an expert massage. Feet are then treated with organic rose cuticle oil and finished with vegan nail polish.”

What is your personal beauty philosophy and how do you interpret this in your business?“It’s pretty simple, I don’t like to overcomplicate my approach. I believe you get clear and glowing skin from a combination of things–good, nourishing food, love and laughter with friends, a little kiss from the sun (not too much), beauty sleep and regular professional facial treatments.

This natural and simplistic approach to beauty and skincare is reflected in our refined treatment menu which offers all of the essential treatments one needs to maintain good skin health and stay well groomed. We don’t want customers to feel intimidated or overwhelmed by our offering so we stripped everything right back.

We also offer a very personalised approach because everyone’s skin is different. We treat no two customers the same and will always personalise treatments to suit all skin types and concerns by adjusting products, techniques, and equipment.”

What's next for Pamperina?

We are still young so we are concentrating on perfecting what we are doing currently.  However, I do see us expanding our treatment menu (a little, not too much) and possibly opening a bigger salon.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH BROADSHEET.COM.AU

Now Open: Pamperina, a Woollahra Beauty Salon Offering Facials and Body Treatments Minus the Pretentiousness via broadsheet.com.au

Non-invasive European-style treatments for people who love to eat and have a glass of wine.

Georgie Palamountain opened Pamperina, her tiny salon in Woollahra, because she couldn’t find a beauty salon offering the style of services she liked, all in one place. She wanted a facial using processes she enjoyed in Europe: deep cleanse, exfoliation, extraction and steam. The other guiding ethos at Pamperina is non-invasive facial treatments.“We don’t judge those who choose to have injectables, and we recognise that what works for one might not be as desirable for another, however we offer an alternative,” says Palamountain. “But women as young as 20 years old can be made to feel they need to have cosmetic treatments ... Excellent results can be achieved through regular facial treatments and a good skin-care routine.”The signature European Deep-Pore Cleansing Facial includes a steam, pore extraction, an antibacterial cleanse, a calming masque, face massage, peel and high-frequency therapy. High-frequency therapy works by running a negative charge over the skin, which is said to kill bacteria and help with circulation. Even if that’s not true, these combined processes left my skin feeling deeply cleansed, with blackheads removed and dull, dead skin removed.
